FIS: Can you tell us a bit about your Development Chemist role with FIS?

Kelly: A key focus of my job is developing new products for FIS customers — formulating chemicals and testing performance in the laboratory environment, as well as QC work to ensure our products meet rigorous quality standards.

I also do a lot of research and development work in 'green chemistry' as finding sustainable and efficient chemical solutions is becoming more and more important for clients in all sectors, and I help in technical enquiries, finding specific chemical solutions to specific client challenges or problems.

FIS: Do you spend all your time in the laboratory?

KT: A lot of time in my day is typically spent in the lab — carrying out experiments, testing and gathering data — but I also spend time in the office writing reports, discussing projects with colleagues and meeting clients.

I enjoy lab time but it's always good to have balance in my day and spend time with colleagues working across the entire business.

FIS: What's been your career path to date?

KT: I graduated with a MSci in Chemistry, and during my degree studies I worked for a year for a major alcoholic beverage company in their lab, carrying out analytical method development as well as new product development.

From this experience, I realised I had a real passion for product development and took the opportunity to join FIS after completing my studies.

FIS: You recently celebrated 1 year with FIS Chemicals — how would you describe your first year?

KT: It's been a busy and interesting year, and I've been involved in a wide range of projects already. I've really enjoyed getting to know the chemicals industry and the various sectors our clients work within.

The FIS Chemicals team have been so welcoming too, and I've really enjoyed working with everyone — it's a great group!

"I really enjoy the process of developing a new product — creating new things from lab-scale to full production is really exciting."

FIS: What advice would you give anyone (at school or university, for example) who are looking to pursue a career in chemistry?

KT: Quite simple advice, but really important — be proactive. Progress and success come when you seek out opportunities to learn more and don't wait for it to come to you.

FIS: Apart from learning the technical aspects and fundamentals of chemistry and related sciences, what personal qualities make for a good chemist?

KT: Being curious is a big one. Chemistry is ideal for you if you love to ask questions and find things out, and it's something we can never lose, no matter how experienced we get.

Communication and collaboration are two other important qualities. Enjoying teamwork and the ability to explain ideas to all kinds of people, not just subject matter experts, are both really important.

FIS: What do you enjoy most about your job?

KT: I really enjoy the process of developing a new product — creating new things from lab-scale to full production is really exciting. I also am really proud of our commitment to more environmentally-friendly and sustainable products, and it's great to see clients embracing this approach too.

FIS: What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?

KT: I love hillwalking — it gives me the chance to explore and enjoy our beautiful Scottish scenery, and Aberdeenshire is full of fantastic places to hike. I also enjoy running, when the weather allows!
